Dead Island is probably the closest we are going to get to Lucio Fulci’s Zombie Flesh Eaters (well, I haven’t seen a zombie shark yet – but I remain optimistic that one will show up near the beach at some stage). So that got me thinking – what other zombie films would be good as games, and that haven’t been done yet? Dawn of the Dead has, for all intents and purposes, been done in Dead Rising – although there was that official abomination Road to Fiddler’s Green based on Romero’s Land of the Dead. If Romero was dead he’d be turning in his grave at that one – but as things stand he has to make do with being alive and crying into his cereal each morning as people shit on his name from a great height.

The obvious candidate for me is The Return of the Living Dead by Dan O’Bannon(RIP)- this is my favourite zombie film because it dispenses with attempting to scare the viewer (and let’s face it, slow zombies are cool but they aren’t scary) and instead ops to entertain with a comedic side-swipe at the genre. There’s so much you can do with a game based on this film. You can use zombies of both the waking and running variety, the looming threat of a nuclear strike if the game isn’t completed (but you’d nuke the player anyway!) and it’s set in the 80s so you get access to the period wardrobe, crazy hair and music. Plus, how many zombies in games actually shuffle around mumbling “Braaaaaiins!” Answer: not enough! Make it happen…
